Becoming a Camper

Everyone needs a moment. One big, fun, wonderful moment to anchor your year of experiences. I once heard it said that you should fill your year with small things that are outside your ordinary work and home schedule that bring happiness through the months but always do one big, new thing that you have never done before to solidify your entire year as good and productive. That's your moment, one big and new thing. This year, yours could be to enter in unity with nature, explore the things out there that intrigue and even scare you, and most importantly to start your camping journey.

I'd like to take a minute to bring you along as a beginner in the camping space. Imagine you have been putting your time and energy into your job for what feels like forever. Coming home from putting in a full day, you begin to make supper for yourself and quite possibly other hungry humans and pets within your household. As you cook, you let your mind wander a little bit and think, "What if I just took a weekend away and just got to sit for a while. Fill my lungs with fresh air and do as much or as little as I feel like doing for a couple work free days." The spark of interest is now upon you. All that remains, is to figure out how.

I'm here to help! Take heart when I say, camping can be extremely simple. The first step is to check around on the internet to see where there is a campground near home. For the weekend, I recommend making it a reasonable driving distance of under 2 hours so your time isn't entirely spent on the road. Some people find a favourite spot and will drive all day just to spend one night there. Its important that you find a "lot" or camping space that has the accommodation's you feel comfortable with. For the first experience, I would look for one with power, water, and a washroom within the campground. Often you will find them very near by a town which is very handy if you like to eat in town and explore or rest at the camp. The first time it can be easy to forget or overlook an element of the trip and you may need supplies from a nearby town also. Google is a fantastic resource for finding the perfect spot. Have you found the one? Awesome!

Now we have the perfect place in mind. Lets begin to gather tools for our trip. Most importantly we will need; a shelter, bed, way to store food, bag for your belongings, clothes for the climate you're camping in, fire supplies if we are using a fire pit, food, lighting, chair, hygiene essentials, cooking tools if you plan to cook your meals, dish cleaning supplies and water. The extent of these tools will vary as you get more involved with camping, for now you can begin with just a few. Modern equipment has made the energy required for you to have a great experience quite manageable. From pop up tents to plug in coolers and self inflating sleep mats, you can have it set up in a flash and be sipping coffee comfortably by lunch.

Follow along with us as we dig deeper into the world of camping and we introduce you to the tools you need and some of the tools you just think are awesome! There is so much to explore, keep an eye out for our next blog on The Post and we will get you on your way to that one big moment to set your year right!
